High Activation Performance: Significantly enhances the wettability of material surfaces, creating active surfaces that facilitate subsequent coating and bonding.

Enhanced Coating Adhesion: Through surface coating treatment, improves surface adhesion, increasing bonding reliability and durability, suitable for industrial coating and bonding processes.

Excellent Cleaning Effect: Effectively removes dust and oil stains, achieving fine cleaning and eliminating static electricity, particularly suitable for applications requiring high cleanliness.

Improves Printing Quality: As a pre-printing surface treatment, it significantly increases ink adhesion, enhancing printing quality.

Multi-functional Surface Treatment: Suitable for various materials, such as polymer plastics, ceramics, glass, PVC, paper, and metals, enhancing surface energy and improving surface tension characteristics to meet different industrial needs.

Gentle Treatment, Material Protection: Uses low-temperature plasma technology to break molecular bonds on the material surface, increasing chemical reaction activity without affecting the material's base properties, ideal for treating heat-sensitive polymer materials.

Types of Plasma Treatment

Vacuum Plasma Treatment
Manufacturers have traditionally performed plasma treatments in vacuum chambers, adding other gases such as argon, helium, oxygen or hydrogen and applying energy or an electrical field. Before these gases are added, the air inside these enclosures is removed. The gases then flow into the chamber, and energy is introduced.
Vacuum plasma treatments can allow for precise and consistent surface cleaning and activation. However, the ion bombardment intrinsic to these methods can harm delicate materials and components, such as wafers, posing a challenge for industries where plasma plays a key role in manufacturing procedures.

Atmospheric Plasma Treatment
Another conventional approach uses high-voltage atmospheric plasma to perform these treatments, in which energetic electrons and highly reactive radicals interact with materials' surfaces. As no vacuum is required, this method facilitates a more energy- and time-efficient process, making it both scalable and cost-effective. Manufacturers can also treat large or irregular surface areas.

Working Process of Plasma Treatment

Plasma is created by adding energy to a gas and in most cases for surface treatment the obvious gas to use is air. Some specialist systems or older systems might prefer pure oxygen and in some cases it might be sensible to use argon, nitrogen or other specific chemistry to tailor the process and avoid the use of oxygen entirely.
This method creates the plasma using high voltage, but the plasma discharge itself is voltage free so even a powerful machine can treat delicate substrates like PCBs or thin films without causing damage.

Gasses Typically Used in Plasma Treatment

Oxygen (O2)
Oxygen plasma treatment makes use of oxygen (O2), which is one of the most commonly used gases in plasma processes, especially plasma cleaning. It is readily available and is a low-cost option. Oxygen plasma can also be combined with other gases to perform other surface treatments such as plasma etching. Oxygen plasma is typically light blue in color.

Argon (Ar)
Argon plasma treatment makes use of argon (Ar), which is an inert gas. Argon has about the same solubility as oxygen and is 2.5 times as soluble in water as nitrogen. This element is colorless and odorless in its liquid and gaseous forms. The sputter effect from the argon plasma can lead to chemical changes as contaminants may be removed, and the etching effect may be selective. Argon is used for contamination removal, surface activation, and crosslinking. Argon plasma is typically bluish pink, violet or purple in color.

Helium (He)
Helium plasma treatment uses the chemical element of helium (He) with the atomic number 2. It is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, monatomic non-toxic, inert gas and the first in the noble gas group. Helium is useful for plasma treatments as the higher frequency and lower mass enable any arc that starts to form to be quenched before it can damage the substrate. Helium plasma is typically a violet-blue color, but can also be pink.

Nitrogen (N2)
Nitrogen plasma treatment uses nitrogen (N2) with the atomic number 7. It is very suitable for treating steel objects using plasma nitriding. This process involves using a nitrogen plasma treatment to deposit a hard layer onto steel surfaces, increasing wear resistance, surface hardness, and increasing fatigue strength. Nitrogen plasma is typically a blue, sometimes violet color depending on the presence of other gases in the chamber.

Hydrogen (H2)
Hydrogen plasma treatment uses hydrogen (H2) with the atomic number 1. It is the lightest element. At standard conditions, hydrogen is a diatomic molecule gas. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and highly combustible. The typical color of a hydrogen plasma is pink or reddish.

FAQ

Q: What is plasma treatment?

A: Plasma treatment is a versatile process that cleans and activates material surfaces used in the production and assembly of electronic, medical, automotive and aerospace components. This process relies on a neutral ionized gas made up of negative and positive ions and free electrons to make various surfaces more suitable for subsequent operations, such as coating, printing and adhesive bonding.

Q: What are plasma treatments used for?

A: Plasma treatments are used to modify surfaces before various production processes. Many materials, such as plastic, have low surface energy, which affects adhesion strength. If the surface energy is inadequate, the components and materials used to make medical devices, consumer electronics and specialty items are less likely to function properly and maintain their appearance. Uneven paint finishes, dust imperfections and liquid beading are issues associated with low surface energy.

Q: How long does a plasma treatment take?

A: The duration of a plasma treatment varies depending on several factors, including the material type, desired surface modification, and the plasma system used.
Treatment times can range from a few seconds to several minutes. Complex treatments involving multiple steps or intricate geometries May require longer durations to achieve the desired outcomes.

Q: How long do the effects of plasma treatment last?

A: The longevity of plasma treatment effects depends on several factors, such as the material, the environment, and the specific modification applied. The results can generally last from hours to weeks, but some treatments can retain their benefits for months or even years.
